When manga began to be translated in large volumes into other languages, one feature which made it an explosive addition to the international comics world was the robust range of titles aimed at female audiences, including shoujo (girls' manga) and jousei (women's manga) as well as subgenres. We will discuss the early evolution of shoujo into and out of the war, and the tradition of revolutionary shoujo from Princess Knight through Rose of Versailles and the Magnificent Forty-Niners, via Revolutionary Girl Utena to recent radical deconstructionist series like Puella Magica Madoka. We will also discuss the economic histories of the publication of shoujo and jousei vs. shounen and seinen, and answer, among other questions, why jousei has only started to be abundant in English since 2008.
